Alabama Sawyer garners 2 'Made in the South' awards

Avondale's Alabama Sawyer, a field-to-studio furniture company, took two Made in the South awards from Garden & Gun.

The company received the "Home" category award and also the "Overall" category award, which carries a $10,000 prize, for its winning piece, "Wide Plank Table," made from wood from a local Hackberry tree.

In addition, Orange Beach's Maho Shades won in style, and Birmingham-based Tom Beckbe and Co. was a runner-up in the outdoor category.

Alabama Sawyer mills lumber from urban state forests into furniture and home accents. The wood is typically taken from trees that have already fallen because of storms, old age or that have been removed by tree services.

A panel of Garden & Gun editors and guest judges chose a winner and three runners-up in each category, as well as one overall winner. The winners of the 2017 Made in the South Competition were announced on Nov. 17 and will be featured in Garden & Gun's December 2017/January 2018 issue.

Cliff Spencer, head of design and production and one of the company's founders, called the awards "an unbelievable honor."

"It's exciting and validating," he said. "Alabama holds the second largest urban forest in the country and trees come down every day that would typically be sent to a landfill. Alabama Sawyer saves the logs and gives them a second life as expertly-crafted pieces of furniture, designed to last for generations."

Spencer said the Hackberry wood for the table came from a neighborhood in Birmingham. The Alabama Sawyer-designed wishbone base was hand-poured at Sloss Furnace. The photos that editors initially saw were taken by photographer Cary Norton and art directed by graphic designer Sydney Newsome.

"Birmingham as a city helped us get the awards," Leigh Spencer, another company co-founder, said. "We are grateful to Garden & Gun for acknowledging our work."
