The Hells Angels are expected to attract up to 300 people to a 35th anniversary party and motorcycle ride in Nanaimo this weekend, police say.

B.C.’s anti-gang Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit announced Tuesday that it will help Vancouver Island police agencies keep tabs on the event.

Sgt. Brenda Winpenny, who speaks for the unit, said the party will likely draw members of the Hells Angels, its support clubs and other outlaw motorcycle gangs.

“Police attend these events for many reasons, such as to deter any illegal activity and ensure public safety by way of an overt police presence,” she said in a statement.
