A Jackson County, Indiana man is charged with killing his girlfriend.
Brian Cogdill is charged with the murder of Emma Jamison.
"It's sad that you'd lose a life at 19 years of age. She would have had a lot of good years left ahead of her," Jackson County Sheriff Mike Carothers said.
Investigators said Cogdill called 911 on Sept. 6 and said Jamison was suffering from a drug overdose.
When emergency crews arrived at the home, Cogdill's story didn't add up for deputies.
"They noticed some injuries to the person who was there, to the female. They noticed some of those and of course the ambulance crew was working with her," Carothers said.
Jamison was taken to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour for treatment.
Doctors found no signs of an overdose but reported serious injuries to her body, including bruises, lacerations and what appeared to be bite marks.
Doctors said Jamison had bruises all over her body, a broken jaw, broken teeth, and lost a lot of blood.
Investigators said Cogdill told them he had been with Jamison for 45 minutes before calling for help and that Jamison was walking and talking.
"The medical examiner who performed the autopsy said that she would not have been walking and talking during those 45 minute periods due to the injuries that she sustained," Jackson County Prosecutor Jeff Chalfant said.
Court documents revealed Cogdill reportedly told people he would shackle Jamison to a bed because he said he didn't want her to use drugs.
Deputies said Cogdill hid in his father's house when they tried to arrest him. Eventually, deputies were able to talk with Cogdill on the phone and get him to come out of the home.
Cogdill is at the Jackson County Jail.
A judge set his trial date for March 5.
