Japan Grants Kshs 45.4 Million to seven projects in Kenya
The Government of Japan has been providing funds to non-profit organizations such as Self Help groups, CBOs, NGOs, Schools, Medical Institutions and County Governments through the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) since 1989.
On 26th February 2018, seven Grant Contracts for GGP were signed by H.E. Mr. Toshitsugu Uesawa, the Ambassador of Japan to Kenya and the representatives of seven grantee organizations at the Embassy in Nairobi. The total amount of the seven projects is more than USD 457,000 (approx. Kshs 45.4Million).
1. The Project for the Construction of Classrooms at Kwadadu Primary School (Kilifi County)
Kwadadu Primary School was awarded 50,156 USD to construct four classrooms. Currently, the school has only one permanent classroom and others are all made of mud, so many pupils struggle with jiggers. Learning is also hampered during the rainy season because rain water gets inside the classrooms due to lack of windows and doors. Through improving the educational environment at the school, the project is expected to improve the school enrollment rates and academic performance.
2. The Project for the Development of Educational Infrastructure at Gabina Primary School (Kilifi County)
Gabina Primary School was awarded 84,409 USD to construct four classrooms and three toilet blocks and to install furniture. The existing classrooms are all made of mud and many pupils suffer from jiggers. Learning is also hampered during the rainy season because rain water gets inside the classrooms. This project is expected to improve the school enrollment rates and increase the academic performance through improving educational and hygienic environment for 121 pupils.
3. The Project for the Development of Educational Infrastructure at Reten Primary School (Samburu County)
Reten Primary School was awarded USD 72,404 to construct 4 classrooms, an administration block and pit latrines for girls and to install furniture. Currently the school runs from class 1 to 4 and only has three classrooms, two of which are semi-permanent. The class 4 pupils learn from a cramped makeshift wood and iron sheet classroom, adjoined to the school kitchen. The smoke from the kitchen hampers learning. Boys and girls share toilet facilities. There is no administration block hence no privacy for teachers and staff. Expanded and improved educational and hygienic infrastructure will improve the learning environment, expand the enrollment to class 5 to 8 and build the morale of the pupils, teachers and community.
4. The Project for the Development of Educational Infrastructure at Reteti Primary School (Samburu County)
Reteti Primary School was awarded USD 81,622 to construct 4 classrooms, an administration block, pit latrines and to install furniture, to improve the learning environment.
The school runs from class 1 to 4 with pupils sharing two semi-permanent and two permanent classrooms with the ECD children. For class 5 pupils enroll in schools at least 7km away or in boarding schools at a very tender age. With a population of 230 pupils and four toilets for girls and boys, the current facilities do not meet the ration recommended by the Ministry of Education. The girls avoid going to school due to lack of privacy.
The teachers are forced to use toilet facilities of a nearby Church. There is no administration block. Expanded and improved educational and hygienic infrastructure at the school will expand enrollment to class 5 to 8, improved retention rates and build the morale of the pupils, teachers and community.
5. The Project for the Development of Educational Infrastructure at Leng’arde Primary School (Samburu County)
Leng’arde Primary School was awarded USD 51,519 to construct 2 classrooms, an administration block and pit latrines and to install furniture.
The school runs from Standard 1 to 8 with only 5 classrooms. This means that some classrooms are shared making it very cramped and difficult to learn effectively. In addition, one classroom also serves as the Administration block. The boys have a dilapidated iron structure for toilets while the teachers have none within the school compound. Proper and improved educational and hygienic infrastructure will improve the learning environment and build the morale of the pupils, teachers and community.
6. The Project for Construction of Dormitories at Gesiaga Secondary School (Nyamira County)
Gesiaga Secondary School was awarded 89,952 USD to construct two dormitories and to install 86 double deckers. Currently, the school has six dormitories which can accommodate only 720 students against 1,104 students. The dormitories are very crowded and one mattress is shared by two students. By constructing 2 dormitories, this project will help to alleviate the overcrowding and create a more hygienic and safer environment.
7. The Project for Improvement of Educational and Hygienic Environment for Kondoro Primary School (Migori County)
Kondoro Primary School was awarded 27,514 USD to construct two classrooms and six pit latrines and to install 100 desks. Currently, two out of eight classrooms are made of iron sheet and have no walls. Learning is hampered during the rainy season. Through improving educational and hygienic environment at the school, the project is expected to improve the school enrollment rates and academic performance.
Ambassador Uesawa congratulated the seven organizations which were selected from more than 900 applications received in 2017. He wished them success and assured them of the Embassy’s support during the implementation period.
